Case Study

Law firm high stress levels

1. The description

A law firm within Liverpool and Manchester reported a sudden and significant increase in absenteeism rates due to high stress levels. The law firm reports many of its staff have recently been involved in a shocking and disturbing case which has left a number of individuals within the office suffering from high stress levels. The law firm requested the assistance of an occupational health service to reduce the stress among their employees and, therefore, reduce absenteeism.

2. The intervention

Following a consultation a occupational health service advised the introduction of counselling to aid members of staff suffering from stress.The employees within the law firm were offered free counselling sessions in a one to one or group based setting. 55% of the employees accepted at least one counselling session. Within the counselling sessions the employees had the opportunity to discuss recent stressors in a confidential environment.

3. The results

Following the introduction of counselling sessions the absenteeism rate within the law firm reduced dramatically to the lowest it had been in 20 years. The employees reported an improvement in mood both in the workplace and at home.
