Case Study

Long term absences in manufacturing

1. The description

A manufacturing company within Liverpool and Manchester reported a high occurrence of musculoskeletal injury within their workforce. The company’s sickness absence rate due to musculoskeletal injury was 5.34% with more than 55% of that being made up of staff on long term sick leave. The manufacturing company requested the help of an occupational health service to reduce long term absenteeism and the incidence of musculoskeletal injury.

2. The intervention

The occupational health service assessed the absenteeism audit and highlighted the main cause of musculoskeletal injury was due to poor manual handling techniques. A team of multidisciplinary therapists implemented a number of occupational health services including workplace assessment and manual handling training.

3. The results

Following the completion of the workplace assessments and multiple manual handling training workshops the absenteeism rate due to musculoskeletal injury had reduced to 4.36% and less than 40% of that made up long term sick leave. The staff within the factory reported feeling valued and supported and felt confident they had the skills to prevent further injury at work.
