Lower back pain in desk jobs

1. The description

A supermarket customer service office in Manchester and Liverpool reported that 1 in 5 people had lower back pain within their office and 50% of those people said their lower back pain reduced their productivity while at work. The customer service office requested the assistance of an occupational health service to help improve productivity and reduce lower back pain within their office.

2. The intervention

A occupational health service advised the completion of a workstation ergonomic assessment which was arranged immediately. The results from the assessment allowed the therapists to advise appropriate chairs and altered desk and computer height to prompt good posture and optimal working patterns. The occupational health service also provided training for the staff on how to use and adjust ergonomic equipment.

3. The results

A month following the introduction of the ergonomic equipment only 1 in 9 people reported suffering from lower back pain. The staff within the office also reported feeling more productive and valued while at work.
