Case Study

Fireman return to work plan

1. Description

A fireman was injured in a car accident in Manchester and Liverpool which caused permanent damage and was unable to perform all his workplace duties.While the fireman awaited surgery the assistance of an occupational therapists was requested to investigate the individual's functional capacity.

2. The intervention

A occupational therapist completed a specific job task analysis, functional capacity evaluation and risk assessment. Through activity modification the fireman was able to complete all his workplace duties despite the damage caused during the car accident. It was agreed by the surgeon that the proposed surgery was unnecessary and the fireman completed a gradual return to work programme.

3. The results

The fireman returned to full time work within a short amount of time and was able to work effectively and efficiently without the need of invasive surgery.
