Case Study

Workplace readiness case study

1. Description

A prison officer was aiming to returning to work following a short period of absence due to a traumatic workplace event. The prison officer experienced emotional trauma after being physically assaulted by one of the inmates. Since the event the prison officer has suffered from high stress levels and panic attacks. The HR department at the prison requested the assistance of an occupational health service to ensure the prison officers safe and speedy return to work.

2. The intervention

Following a consultation with the occupational health service a functional capacity evaluation was organised. The results from the functional capacity evaluation highlighted the officer was physically fit to return to his full duties however it highlighted extremely high stress and anxiety levels. The occupational health service advised a workplace readiness programme to assist the officer back to effective levels of emotional health. The prison officer received one to one treatment with a psychologist who helped him to manage his own stress and anxiety levels within the workplace using a variety of techniques.

3. The results

The prison officer returned to work within 3 months following the physical assault with an increase depth of knowledge and understanding of his own mental health and wellbeing. If a similar situation was to happen in the future the prison officer would be equipped with the knowledge to manage his own anxiety and stress levels.
