Case Study

Ill health retirement case study

1. Description

A swimming teacher based in Preston was involved in a car accident which left her with multiple orthopedic injuries. Following discharge from the hospital she struggled to return to her previous working hours. The local council which she worked for requested an assessment be completed to provide possible recommendations on specific accommodations that could be made to aid her return to work or the possibility of ill health retirement.

2. The intervention

An occupational health nurse and Physiotherapist completed a full assessment of the individual's functional capacity in relation to the physical and psychological demands of her occupation. Following the assessment it was evident there were no suitable accommodations that could be made and it would be appropriate for her to take ill health retirement.

3. The results

The swimming teacher was unable to safely return to her previous occupation and due to the extent of her injuries there was little if no opportunity for employment elsewhere. The swimming teacher successfully applied for a ill health retirement and was able to gain access to her pension prior to usual retiring age.
